Grey Star Ghost is the musical project of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Tucker. Tucker originally formed the emotive indie alt rock outfit in Denton, Texas in 2018 and is now based between Albuquerque, New Mexico and Salt Lake City, Utah. Grey because very little in life is black and white, Star because stars are infinite, and Ghost because we all have things in our past that were once alive and haunt us today. At times atmospheric and contemplative, at times fierce and with an edge, their music has been described as haunting, having a vulnerability that makes it powerful, absolutely beautiful and completely heartbreaking.
By late 2018 Jacob Tucker had been writing songs for years and needed a band to bring them to life. Luckily, some of his closest friends were musicians and they decided to start playing his songs together. The band's lineup featured Blake Lawson on lead guitar, Tyler January on bass and backing vocals, Christine Salmon on backing vocals, violin, and glockenspiel, Riley Jones and Will Huebner on drums and percussion. They released their debut album, Silence Found, January 9, 2020.
In June 2020, Tucker moved from Denton, TX to Albuquerque, NM. He continued writing songs during the isolation of Covid-19 and recorded follow-up album, Earth Still Moves, released December 3, 2021. Tucker played most of the instruments on the album, with the help of some new friends in the studio - Jon Paz and Simeon Beardsley. Olivia Tucker also provided backing vocals on the album. Indie music blog BuzzSlayers described Earth Still Moves as follows, “With a tasteful and beautifully woven album release, Grey Star Ghost brings singer songwriter and indie-pop together in a cinematic and powerful atmosphere that paints vivid visuals and portrays a massive palette of sounds.”
Grey Star Ghost has been active in the Albuquerque music scene since 2022 with new friends and bandmates alongside Tucker. The band's lineup features Sean Umstead on drums, percussion, and backing vocals, Ken Easton on lead guitar and backing vocals, and Angel Cruz on bass. They entered the studio in January 2024 to record a new full length album. The lead single for the album, "The Party", was released May 31 and quickly became the band's most streamed single. Additional singles, "Where to Begin" and "Bleeding Again" also topped the streams of any singles released prior to "The Party" and contributed to the band's highest listener numbers to date.
In June 2024, the ever-nomadic Tucker moved to Salt Lake City seeking new inspiration and will continue making music as Grey Star Ghost. The band released their third full length album, "Angels Leaving", October 4, 2024. It is their most streamed and critically acclaimed album to date with Earmilk describing it as follows, "Grey Star Ghost's ability to blend vulnerability with sonic complexity is evident throughout the album, making Angels Leaving their most comprehensive and captivating work...solidifying Grey Star Ghost as a band with a timeless and ever-evolving sound."
